I first discovered Collide with the release of Chasing the Ghost. Since then I have made sure not to miss a release and I have not been disappointed yet. I think while Two Headed Monster had a bit more rock influence within the fluid filled space that is Collide, the new album, Counting to Zero, is far more sedate and I mean that in the absolute best way. The songs flow in an ethereal mix of creative and catchy riffs in the electronic production of Statik with the heavenly and celestial vocals of kaRIN. A mix of seductive dark wave melodies that weave their way through the music and pull the listener deep into the songs.
While I discovered Collide while listening to such bands at The Gathering, Depeche Mode, Conjure One and Tori Amos I have to say that while listening to Counting to Zero I came to wonder what Bryan Ferry might have sounded like if he had gone in a more electronic direction. His songs like Windswept from Boys & Girls and Zamba from Bete Noire have that same emotional and romantic fluidity that I love so much in Collide. The Roxy Music song While My Heart Is Still Beating from Avalon is another fine example of this.
OK, enough comparisons to other bands. Collide stand alone as a band with a unique sound with no equal. The music is infused with eerie mysterious emotion that can sends chills up your spine and leave you wanting more. I don't hear too many albums that make me want to buy up everything the artist has ever done but if Counting to Zero had been my first purchase I would be buying up the back catalog as we speak (but of course I already own it). And if you love Counting To Zero or Two Headed Monster then you really must give a listen to the Collide side project, The Secret Meeting Ultrashiver. It is as good as any Collide album.
